Franz Josef helicopter weather: cancellations, refunds and how to still fly
Franz Josef gets about five metres of rain a year. Flights are cancelled often enough that it should change how you plan the drive, not just how you pack. Here is how the operators decide, and the one booking habit that gets people into the air.

How the decision is made
It is the cloud base, not the rain
People assume rain grounds helicopters. It mostly does not. What grounds them is cloud sitting below the tops, because the pilot has to be able to see the terrain on the way up the valley and, more importantly, on the way back down it.
So a grey drizzly morning with a high cloud base flies, and a bright still morning with a layer stuck at eight hundred metres does not. This is why standing outside your accommodation looking at the sky tells you almost nothing, and why the operator calls you rather than the other way round.
The second factor is the landing site. A flight can be legal to fly and still not able to put the skids down, if the snow is fresh and soft or the site is in cloud. That is when you get the route without the landing.

Three habits that actually work
Two nights, not one. The single highest-value decision. Everybody who missed out had one morning here.
Book the first slot. Air is smoothest before the valley heats up, and if it goes bad you still have the afternoon in reserve.
Book early anyway. Free cancellation to 24 hours means an early booking is a free option. In December and January the first slots go weeks ahead, and there is nothing to gain by waiting to see the forecast.

How often are Franz Josef helicopter flights cancelled?
Often enough to plan around. This is one of the wettest inhabited places in New Zealand. The reliable fix is to book the first morning of a two-night stay rather than the only morning of one.
Do helicopters fly in the rain at Franz Josef?
Often, yes. What stops flights is cloud sitting below the mountain tops, not rain itself. A drizzly morning with a high cloud base flies.
Do I get my money back if the flight is cancelled?
Yes — a full refund or a free reschedule if the operator cancels for weather. If you cancel yourself more than 24 hours before, you also get a full refund.
What if the flight goes but does not land on the snow?
That is not refundable. The landing is never guaranteed; if the surface or the cloud makes it unsafe the pilot flies the route without landing.
What is the best time of day to avoid cancellation?
The first slot of the morning. Cloud builds as the valley warms through the day, and the first flights are cancelled least often.
Which months have the fewest cancellations?
February to April give the longest runs of settled weather. Winter is clear but the days are short and the wet spells are long.
Are heli-hikes cancelled more often than flights?
Yes. The operator needs a stable window long enough to get everyone back off the ice, so a short clear spell that allows a scenic flight may not allow a hike.
